For the second week in a row, Justin Rose had a multi-stroke lead going into Sunday. While he faltered a week ago on his way to a 9th place finish, this Sunday he kept his cool for a one-stroke victory over Ryan Moore and his second PGA title in a month. “It’s a fact,” said a very satisfied and confident Rose. “I’m playing great.”
Playing not so great all weekend long was Tiger Woods, who played four straight rounds at or above par at a non-major for the first time since 1999.
Rose said shooting a final round 75 the week before truly was a lesson that he put to immediate use:
I knew having not closed out last week, it was important for me—just for myself—to do it today. I felt like I really did put into play the lessons I learned at Hartford. I played much slower. And I really felt calm. … I felt very much in control of my emotions, and it’s been a long week.
The win put Rose #3 on the PGA money list and #2 in the FedEx Cup standings. By finishing second, Ryan Moore earned his way to this month’s British Open at St. Andrews.
Tiger has now gone six straight PGA events without winning — his longest drought since 1998. Up next for Woods is a two-day pro-am in Ireland on Monday and Tuesday — so his T-46 finish may have allowed him to get an early start. As he had after Thursday’s 73, Tiger was still focusing more on how well he was driving than on how poorly he was putting. “I was driving it so good, I just wanted to hit driver every hole,” said an untamed Tiger. “It hasn’t been like that in an extremely long time.”

I think Tiger Woods should fare pretty well at St. Andrews. It’s a course he as excelled at over the years, and now that it looks like his divorce will be doing through, he can concentrate on his golf game much more. Tiger has been driving the ball well, but his putting has been terrible. Congrats to Justin Rose, he played well and has been playing extremely well all year long. He’ll most likely be very competitive and finish near the top at St. Andrews.
