Rory McIlroy Wins First Major with Record Performance at US Open

Maybe it was fitting that Tiger Woods wasn’t at this year’s US Open to steal any of the spotlight from a dominant performance by the 22-year-old who seems like golf’s next big thing.  Rory McIlroy, after blowing leads in two of the last three majors, won his first major championship in Tiger-like fashion — holding the lead after all four rounds and winning by eight strokes.

Rory, the phenom from Northern Ireland with talents reminiscent of Tiger but looks more like Justin Beiber, set or tied 12 records at the US Open, including lowest score and lowest score to par (-16).  Some of that was no doubt helped by an easier than usual course and favorable weather, but he still was in command virtually start to finish. Still, it’s worth keeping in mind that Louis Oosthuizen won the British Open last year by seven strokes, so we shouldn’t make too big a deal out of his winning margin.

Want more McIlroy superlatives?  He’s the youngest US Open winner in 88 years, and he’s moved up to a career-best No. 4 in the Official World Golf Rankings after starting the tournament at No. 8 in the world.

While Rory is barely old enough to drink in the US, he wasted no time posting a photo on Twitter of himself chugging something out of the US Open trophy on Sunday night.
