The Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 on Sunday behind a strong pitching performance by Homer Bailey, whose already made two trips to the disabled list this season and picked up his first win since May 16. The defending NL Central champion Reds are still a game under .500 and in fourth place, but are only 3.5 games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers.

Bailey pitched a season-high 7 1/3 innings on Sunday, allowing only three hits into the eighth inning in a performance that surprised even him. “I showed up at the ballpark not feeling great, but we won so everything’s great,” Bailey said after his 88-pitch outing. “Warming up before the game, I felt like I had nothing. I was all over the place. I was thinking I might not get past the second inning.

Ryan Hannigan drove in the eventual winning run in the seventh inning, and Zack Cozart hit his first Major League home run in the next inning to provide a little extra cushion. Reds closer Francisco Cordero, who had blown three of his last four save opportunities, worked a perfect ninth, retiring Albert Pujols, Matt Holliday, and Lance Berkman

“That was a huge game for all of us,” said Reds manager Dusty Baker. The home series win over the Cardinals was Cincinnati’s first series win since June 27-29, when the Reds took two of three from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at historic Tropicana Field.
