Red Wings Win 18th Straight At Home, Two Shy of NHL Record

After beating the Edmonton Oilers 4-2 on Wednesday, the Detroit Red Wings have now won 18 straight home games and are just two games shy of equaling the all-time NHL mark. (It bares noting though that with the recent invention of the shootout, wins are more common than they were over most of NHL history when ties were possible.) The Red Wings could set the record next Tuesday.

Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said his team wasn’t playing their best in Wednesday’s win over Edmonton. “Tonight, we weren’t great, but we were good to win it,” said Babcock. “It’s nice to win at home, it’s nice to feel comfortable … We’ve been a pretty good team most nights here at home.

As for the Red Wings players, they don’t sound too wrapped up in the possible record. “The home win streak is really unique,” said Detroit’s Drew Miller, who put the Wings ahead for good in Wednesday’s third period with his 11th goal of the season. “I don’t think we go into it really trying to say, ‘Hey, let’s do it to get this streak.’ I think we’re just trying to establish our game at home and play night in and night out the way that we should play.”

The Red Wings (36-17-2) just started a six-game homestand after playing 21 of their last 31 games on the road. They’ll go for 19 on Friday against the Anaheim Ducks (21-24-8), then could tie the NHL record on Sunday night against the Philadelphia Flyers (30-16-7) in a nationally televised game on the NBC Sports Network (formerly Versus). Only two teams in NHL history have won twenty straight at home — the 1929-30 Boston Bruins and 1976 Philadelphia Flyers. If Detroit can beat the Ducks and Flyers, only the Dallas Stars (27-23-2) next Tuesday would stand in the way of history.
