It was a somewhat historic night in Detroit on Sunday, as the Red Wings tied an NHL-record with their 20th straight home win and Detroit defenseman Niklas Lidstrom appeared in his 1,500th career game, breaking the league record for a player who spent his entire career with a single team. The Wings will go for the NHL record on Tuesday when they host the 22-24-9 Anaheim Ducks.

“We don’t want to talk about [the record],” said Lidstrom after Sunday’s 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. “We just want to keep it going.” Only two other teams in NHL history have won 20 straight at home — the Boston Bruins in 1929-30 and the Flyers in 1976 — and to be fair, it was tougher for those teams when ties were possible and plentiful in the pre-shootout NHL.

The Flyers twice went ahead in the third period, but each time the Red Wings took just over two minutes to get things tied back up. Philadelphia’s inability to hold the lead longer was key according to Flyers coach Peter Laviolette.  “If we could have gone in there with the lead at the end of the second period, I think that would have shut the [door],” Laviolette said. Instead Detroit’s Johan Frazen put the Wings ahead for good 52 seconds into the third period with his 22nd goal of the season.

Even if the Wings win on Tuesday against the Ducks, who are in last place in the Pacific Division, they’ll have a long way to go for the North American professional sports record for consecutive home wins.  Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls won 37 straight at home in 1995-96.
