Red Sox Sign Vulcan Tripod

The Boston Red Sox recently inked Joe Nelson, “The Vulcan Tripod,” to a minor league deal.  Nelson had a career year with the Marlins in 2008 and spent 2009 with the Devil Rays, where he was one of Joe Maddon’s best bullpen options.

Nelson also rose to fame in 2009 for his signature Vulcan grip changeup. Inspired by the classic Star Trek “Live long and prosper” hand gesture, Nelson had been using the bizarre grip since his college days at the University of San Francisco.

The Tripod part of his nickname has been less well publicized, but involves the Mayor of Devil Ray Town, 2008 ALCS MVP Matt Garza and Sports Illustrated.

In May, The Mayor/Professor Cork Gaines of Rays Index noticed that Garza had completed a series of sentences for SI.com — one of which mentioned Joe Nelson:

If I could steal one body part from a teammate it would be…Joe Nelson’s.. he knows what it is

And thus, around the same time Garza was hooking up with Bristol Palin at a teen pregnancy conference, the Vulcan Tripod nickname was born.

I’m sure Dustin Pedroia is just pleased as punch.
