The Boston Red Sox came into New Yankee Stadium on Monday and won again, beating the New York Yankees 6-4 to move into a tie for first place in the American League East. The Red Sox have now won six of seven against the Yankees this season, and built a 6-1 lead on the Yankees on Monday thanks to home runs by David Ortiz and Jacoby Ellsbury.
Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez came to the plate as the tying run in the bottom of the ninth, but struck out against Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon, who earned his 200th career save in his 356th career game. In the history of Major League Baseball, only Dennis Eckersley reached the 200-save milestone in fewer games.
Jon Lester scatter eight hits over six innings to earn the win and become the AL’s first eight-game winner at 8-2. Lester also drilled Yankees first baseman Mark Teixiera in the knee cap in the first inning. Teixiera, who has 18 home runs and 41 RBI this season, left the game but “X-rays showed only a bruise on the knee” according to a New York Post report, and he could be back in the lineup on Wednesday.
Some of the New York tabloids were abuzz because Ortiz flipped his bat after hitting his two-run homer off Yankees reliever Hector Noesi, but the Yankees generally downplayed the incident and talk of retaliation in the final two games of the series.
