Rangers Blow World Series … Twice

The Texas Rangers were one strike away from winning the World Series in consecutive innings on Thursday night, but twice blew two-run leads before losing on a walkoff homer in the 11th inning, setting up a winner-takes-all Game 7 against the Cardinals in St. Louis on Friday night. Maybe a team from Texas just isn’t meant to ever win a World Series?

The Rangers led 7-5 in the ninth inning with their closer Naftali Feliz pitching, but Cardinals third baseman David Freese tied the game with a two-out, two-strike, two-RBI triple. The Rangers were up 9-7 in the 10th when Lance Berkman hit a two-out, two-strike, two-RBI single to tie it again. Freese then homered in the 11th to end a wild night.

How can the Rangers recover from being so close — twice — and come back and win a Game 7 less than 24 hours later?  They don’t have much choice. “We had it there, right in front of us,” said Rangers catcher Mike Napoli. “It hurts. But, we gotta let this go.”

The most important thing, according to Rangers designated hitter Michael Young: “Obviously, we have to get the final out.”

Rangers manager Ron Washington felt like his god had forsaken him, but promised the Rangers would get it done in Game 7. “I was just sitting there praying that we’d get that last out,” Washington explained. “And we didn’t get it … We’ll bounce back tomorrow.

They better, because barring another weather postponement, there won’t be another tomorrow for either team. The Cardinals are -141 favorites to win Game 7, and have Chris Carpenter going at home against Matt Harrison of the Rangers. Harrison didn’t make it out of the fourth inning in Saturday’s Game 3, while Carpenter won Game 1 and took a no-decision in Game 5 on Monday.
