Pro Bowl Reaches New Heights of Absurdity

Boy, those Pro Bowl rosters are lookin’ pretty, pretty good, eh? The NFL’s attempt to bring extra attention to its annual All-Star extravaganza by staging it in the same city as the Super Bowl the week prior to the Big Game has blown up in their collective faces.

The powers that be inside Rog Goodell’s offices just need to bite the bullet and pack up the sideshow circus for good. No one gives a damn about the Pro Bowl, especially when you remove the only incentive players have for attending. That being the all-expense-paid trip to gorgeous Hawaii for fun in the sun.

Due to the usual litany of injuries and last-minute replacements, the AFC/NFC squads that take the field on Sunday will resemble a JV version of the NFL’s elite. Gone are the likes of Brees, Manning, Favre, Brady, Rivers, Fitzgerald, Welker, Woodson and Harvin.

Instead, we will be treated to David Garrard and his 15 touchdown passes and ten interceptions. Better still, Vince Young’s ten touchdowns and seven picks will be on full display. We’ll also get to witness Donovan McNabb, who barely looked like a professional signal caller the last two games he started, let alone a Pro Bowler.

On the bright side, Adrian Peterson is scheduled to participate, so at least there will be plenty of fumbles to enjoy. In addition, the dog and pony show that is Chad Ochocinco will be present. Chad making an ass of himself is always good for a few laughs.

What’s the point, really? I’d rather watch the best of the best from each conference go bowling than see them run around pretending to care about a meaningless scrimmage. I mean you can still bowl with a torn ACL or a broken hand, can’t you?
