It’s hard to believe that a soccer fan can invade the pitch in an English Premier League game these days due to all of the security and cameras around. However, not only did a young hooligan make it onto the pitch during a match between West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur, he actually took a free kick for Spurs.
The man invaded the action on August 16 at Upton Park during the London derby on the opening day of the 2014/15 season. Tottenham was awarded a free kick just outside of West Ham’s 18-yard box at the 63 minute mark. West Ham set up a defensive wall and Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen prepared himself to take the kick. However, before he was able to do it the fan came out of nowhere and took it for him. The ball sailed over the net and into the crowd.
Stewards chased the invader when he jumped onto the pitch, but weren’t able to catch him until after he had booted the free kick and then celebrated his achievement. The security officials then got a hold of him, took him to the ground, and forced him off the field. After the match Scotland Yard stated that the hooligan was arrested and taken to an East London police station where he was being held.
The score was 0-0 when the fan booted the ball into the stands, but Tottenham newcomer Eric Dier managed to score a late goal in injury time to win the contest 1-0. Both teams were reduced to 10 men as Kyle Naughton of Spurs received a red card for handling the ball in the penalty area and West Ham’s James Collins was booted out after receiving a pair of yellow cards.
In another odd case of pitch invasion, a fan dressed up as Cristiano Ronaldo entered the field of play in Warsaw, Poland during a friendly match between Real Madrid and Fiorentina of Italy. The guy was decked out in the full official kit and had Ronaldo’s name on the back of his shirt. He sprinted onto the pitch just before Madrid was to take a free kick. He chatted with Real’s Karim Benzema for a few seconds and was then quickly escorted away by security staff.
