Nominal Mets ace Mike Pelfrey had a second straight putrid start and has now taken the loss in both of New York’s defeats this season. Pelfrey lasted just two innings and gave up seven runs, six earned. Phillies fifth starter Joe Blanton wasn’t much better, getting chased in the fifth inning when the Mets rallied from 7-0 down to tie the game. The Phillies retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth and went on to win 10-7.

Pelfrey also took the loss on Opening Day at home against the Florida Marlins when he was pulled in the fifth inning. After Wednesday’s loss, his ERA jumped from 10.38 to 15.63 and inspired this punchy New York Post opening line: “Mike Pelfrey wearing the ‘Mets ace’ label has all the authenticity of Snooki performing Shakespeare.”

“It’s only two starts, we can’t overreact right now,” said surprisingly calm Mets manager Terry Collins, who also added that he knows Pelfrey will improve.

The Phillies bullpen held up well to get 14 outs one night after getting 19 when Cole Hamels couldn’t make it out of the third inning in a 7-1 loss in the series opener. Jose Contreras, filling in for injured Phillies closer Brad Lidge, got the save on Wednesday with a 21-pitch ninth inning.
