The Philadelphia Eagles are quite creative when it comes to scoring points. So far the NFL team has scored seven types of touchdowns this season and week five has just been completed. The Eagles have already tied the league record for return touchdowns in the first five games of a season. They achieved this when they scored their sixth such TD on October 4 in their 34-28 win over the St. Louis Rams. In fact, the team’s special teams and defence has been carrying the scoring load lately for the 4-1 club.
The blocked-punt touchdown against the Rams was the 28th consecutive scoring point gained by the club’s special teams or defence. In week four against the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia lost the game 26-21 with all 21 of their points coming without any help from the squad’s offensive line. The Eagles scored three touchdowns, which came on a punt return, an interception, and a blocked punt. That non-offensive scoring streak was the extended to 28 points when James Casey blocked a punt against the Rams and Chris Margos took the ball for a 10-yard touchdown.
The scoring play took place just 23 seconds into the game, which makes the blocked-punt touchdown one of the quickest in history. The streak eventually came to an end when Cody Parker booted a 26-yard field during the Eagles second possession of the contest. The last time an NFL club scored touchdowns on blocked punts in two straight games came back in the 2002 season when the Baltimore Ravens managed to pull it off.
Also, the last time the Eagles managed to score on a blocked punt was back in 1992 and the squad has only managed three touchdowns by its special teams twice in their history. These came way back in 1944 and then 22 years later in 1966. With the blocked-punt touchdowns, Philadelphia has now scored touchdowns in seven different ways and are trying to become the first-ever NFL time to make it eight different ways.
The Eagles now have another 11 games in the 2014 campaign to try and set a new league record. The Eagles scored their first rushing touchdown in week one in a 34-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. They also scored their first receiving touchdown and first fumble-return touchdown in the same week-one game. They then scored a kickoff-return touchdown in week three in a 37-34 victory over the Washington Redskins. The Eagles first blocked-punt return touchdown came a week later in their loss t the 49ers. They also scored a touchdown from an interception return the same game and then scored their first punt-return touchdown in week five against the Rams.
The Eagles just need to score a touchdown on a blocked-field goal return sometime this season to set a new league record with eight different types of touchdowns.
