As most NFL fans predicted, Denver Broncos’ quarterback Peyton Manning set a new league record for touchdown passes on October 19 when he connected for his 509th, which broke the old mark of 508 set by Brett Favre. The 38-year-old Manning threw four touchdown passes in the game against the San Francisco 49ers and Denver went on to win it by a score of 42-17. The record-breaking pass was caught by receiver Demaryius Thomas as Manning went into the game with 506 touchdown passes and left it with 510.

Manning set the new record in 246 regular-season games while it took Favre 56 more contests to reach 208. Many experts figured Manning’s career was all but over when he was cut from the Indianapolis Colts back in March of 2012. However, he was released from the team due to medical reasons, not his playing form. The quarterback underwent four neck surgeries and a spinal-fusion operation. It appeared that he wouldn’t be able to recover properly and stand up to the physical punishment of the sport.

Manning missed the entire 2011 season due to his condition and it looked like his career would end then and there with 399 touchdown passes to his name. The player himself didn’t know if he’d be able to play at the top level anymore, but ended up signing a five-year deal with the Broncos which runs out following the 2016 season. Manning tried to regain strength in his arm during his first season with the team and added 37 more touchdown passes while he was at it.

But nobody could predict what would happen in the 2013 when Manning threw a league-record seven touchdown passes in Denver’s season-opening game against the Baltimore Ravens. He added another 48 after that to finish the season with an NFL record 55 touchdown passes and also set a new record for passing yards gained at 5,477. The incredible performance in 2013 earned him a fifth MVP Awards.

It’s expected that Manning will reach close to 630 touchdowns by the end of the 2016 season if he can keep up his pace of 2.9 per game. Manning said he was honoured and humbled to set the new record, but feels he needs to win one more Super Bowl before his career is over. The Broncos were blown out by the Seattle Seahawks in last year’s championship game and he’s just one for three in Super Bowl contests.

While Manning rules during the regular seasons, but in the playoffs he owns an 11-12 record with a 64 per cent pass-completion mark. He’s also thrown more than an interception per game during the postseason. Still, he has a Super Bowl ring, which is one more than many players achieve, but he’s looking to add one more to go 2 for 4 in championship games.
