On Sunday night in Ottawa, Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby got a point in his 24th consecutive game, but only with a garbage time goal with 3:22 left in a 3-1 loss to the Senators. After the contest, Crosby blasted his team and Santa Claus for the embarrassing loss to the Eastern Conference’s ninth-best team in Pittsburgh’s first game after a two-day Christmas break.

“We looked kind of abnormally sloppy,” said Sid the Kid. “You have tough periods sometimes, but that was pretty bad in the first. Why? Who knows? I’m sure [Christmas] had a little bit to do with it.”

After 20 minutes and 20 seconds of play, the Senators took a 3-0 lead on Robert Karlsson’s second goal of the night. Karlsson’s first goal came on a first period power play with Crosby in the sin bin for slashing. The Penguins outshot the Senators 45-24 but couldn’t solve goaltender Brian Elliott until late in the game.

“It was a very good win and we showed that we are still a very good team,” said Karlsson. “[Elliott] showed he’s here to stay, our defence showed we can shut down some really good players and if you get guys working hard in front of the net you just have to get the puck there.”

Crosby whined more about his team’s slow start: “It’s pretty clear that we had a horrible start and we paid for that in the end.”
