So much for Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers being totally unstoppable — it took fifteen weeks, but the defending Super Bowl champs were finally contained and beaten by the wildly inconsistent Kansas City Chiefs. The Packers fall to 13-1 after a surprising 19-14 road loss to a last-place team that fired its head coach earlier in the week, but now say another title is all that really matters.
“I personally always viewed the undefeated season as, really, just gravy,” said Packers coach Mike McCarthy. “The goal was to get home-field advantage and win the Super Bowl. That’s what we discussed. We were fortunate enough to be in the position to possibly achieve the undefeated season, but we still have the primary goal in front of us, and that’s to get home-field advantage.”
The Packers players echoed their coach’s sentiments. “We wanted perfection,” said tight end Jermichael Finley. “At the same time, it’s all about that Super Bowl. As long as it doesn’t happen three weeks from now, we’re fine.” The Packers had already clinched a first-round bye last week, so were they just due for a letdown? The Packers hadn’t lost in almost a year (they last lost to the Patriots on December 26 of last year), but the Chiefs shut them out in the first half. Rodgers was limited to just 235 yards passing for the game.
Time will tell if this loss was really just an aberration, or a sign that the Packers just hid their flaws awful well in the first 13 games of the season. It might even be enough for Chiefs interim coach Romeo Crennel to get the job permanently, but the Chiefs players were certainly soaking up their upset victory. “We set the tone on both sides of the ball,” said Kansas City linebacker Derrick Johnson. “This is the great thing about football. You can’t always look at the records, because you’ve got grown men out there who are all getting paid.”
