For the second straight year, Pablo Martin of Spain won the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa, the first tournament of the European Tour’s Race to Dubai. Last season, Martin finished 66th in the final 2010 Race to Dubai standings. Martin, ranked No. 286 in the world, won on Sunday with a final round 2-under 70 to finish at 11-under 277 for a two-stroke victory.

Pre-tournament favorite Charl Schwartzel of South Africa (World No. 39) was one of three golfers tied for second. Schwartzel was also runner-up at last year’s Dunhill Championship. Also finishing two shots back were Norway’s Thorbjorn Olesen (No. 172), who made a run with a final round 6-under 66, and South African Anthony Michael (No. 890), who led the tournament after each of the first three rounds but finished with a disappointing 1-over 73.

The highest-ranked player in the field, South African Louis Oosthuizen (No. 24) missed the cut after shooting 4-over 76 and 1-under 71 in his first two rounds.

Martin looked to have a clear path to victory when he opened up a five-shot lead with just six holes to play, but he made things interesting with a triple-bogey on No. 17. That cut his lead to a single shot going into the final hole, but he ended with a birdie to win the tournament.

With the win, he became the European Tour’s first repeat winner since Padraig Harrington won his second straight British Open in 2008. Fellow Spaniards Rafael Cabrera-Bello and Alvaro Velasco marked the occasion by dumping water on Martin, which suited the winner just fine. “Normally, they throw people into ponds and stuff,” he said, “but I’m glad they restrained themselves today, because there are crocodiles and stuff around here.”
