Ozzie: Manny May Be “Savior” For White Sox

The Chicago White Sox have been awarded Manny Ramirez on waivers, and the superstar slugger may be in the lineup for Chicago tonight in Cleveland.  The White Sox didn’t send anything to the Dodgers, Manny’s former employers, but will have to pay the remaining $3.85 million of Manny’s contract.  White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, who like Manny has a colorful reputation, is all kinds of psyched.

Can Manny Ramirez be our savior, I don’t know?” Guillen said. “Can he help? Of course he can help.” Manny comes to a White Sox club that’s in second place in the AL Central, four games back in the loss column of division leader Minnesota.  Manny’s made a few trips to the disabled list this year, but was his usual stellar self when in the Dodgers lineup: he’s hit .311 with 40 RBI in 66 games this season. At 38, Manny will need a good one-month run with the White Sox to get a respectable contract this offseason.

White Sox slugger Paul Konerko gave his new teammate his deserved props:

Manny can hit, everybody knows that. The guy’s a Hall of Famer … one of the best right-handed hitters to ever play this game, ever.

If nothing else, Ozzie joked that Manny would take some attention off him. “If me and Kenny don’t hurt this ballclub, nobody can hurt it,” Ozzie explained. “At least we’ll be talking about Manny and not worry about Ozzie. That’d be great for me.”

After the Cleveland series, the White Sox start their next series at Manny’s old digs at Fenway Park on Friday.

The White Sox have lost nine of their last 14 games before the move.  At the moment, they’re an 18/1 bet to win the AL pennant.
