The world’s greatest hockey player recently collected yet another accolade in a busy offseason. For the fifth straight year, Washington Capitals superstar Alexander Ovechkin was awarded the Valeri Kharlamov Trophy awarded to the best Russian player in the NHL by Sovietskiy Sport. It’s unclear if there’s an actual trophy involved, but Ovechkin did receive a nifty red long-sleeve shirt in a Moscow ceremony.
For those of you who don’t read Russian, the shirt says “I’ve done it five times.”
The Kharlamov Trophy was first awarded in 2003 to Sergei Fedorov, with Ilya Kovalchuk winning in 2004. After the 2005 lockout, Ovechkin has won every year of his brilliant NHL career. Kovalchuk finished third in this year’s voting behind Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk. Coyotes goalie Ilya Bryzgalov was fourth.
“It’s great that Alexander won the award for the fifth time,” Ovechkin’s mom Tatiana said at the ceremony.
“I am especially flattered that I received these votes from my fellow countrymen who play in the NHL,” Ovechkin told Sportbox.ru correspondent Ekaterina Baleva. “I’ll try to receive it for the sixth time.” (Because he really wants a shirt with a six-fingered hand on it — that would be badass.)

I guess he can now have one made that says “2011 Winter Classic Champion”, Stanley Cup awards pending indefinitely.
How about “I played in the Winter Classic and all I got was two stinkin’ regular season points in the standings”?
