Hall of Fame boxer Oscar De La Hoya and future Hall of Famer Floyd Mayweather Jr. have both offered to help former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey with the boxing skills. Rousey was defeated for the first time in her mixed martial arts career on November 14th when fellow American Holly Holm knocked her cold in the second round of their bout in Melbourne, Australia. Rousey at a few knuckle sandwiches during UFC 193 event, but it was a kick to the head that did her in.
De La Hoya, who operates Golden Boy Promotions, has made no secret about the fact that he’d like to promote Rousey if she ever decided to try her hand at professional boxing. When asked about training the 28-year-old Rousey, De La Hoya stared, “I would do it for free. I love the girl…what she’s going through, especially now, if can contact her and get a hold of her and talk to her for like 10 minutes. I would love to do that. She’s a gal who has transcended the sport and can do a lot for boxing.”
Rousey defended her UFC title half a dozen times before Holm, a huge underdog, upset her. De La Hoya said it’s tough for a pro athlete to deal with their first loss and recalled his first defeat to Felix Trinidad of Puerto Rico in his 32nd pro outing back in 1999. A even though Mayweather and Rousey have recently been firing off insults to one another via social media networks, the undefeated 49-0 boxer said he hopes Rousey won’t get discouraged with the loss and hopes she keeps her head held up high. He added, “If she needs help as far as with boxing, I’m here to help her.”
Mayweather, who’s been a champion in five different boxing weight divisions, also advised Rousey not to jump straight into a rematch with Holm. He remarked that she should take some time off to refocus and regroup and that she also needs to regain her confidence first. He even suggested she should wait until Holm has a few more fights before meeting her again. Mayweather said combat sports are all about inches and timing and Rousey’s ground game is excellent, but she could use help with her boxing skills.
Rousey will need to work on her defence before meeting Holm again. However, it’s unclear if she’ll take De La Hoya or Mayweather up on their offers, especially considering her past verbal jabs which she directed at Mayweather. Rousey has laid into Mayweather in the past about his history of domestic abuse, but the recently-retired boxer insists that he doesn’t hold a grudge towards her.
