College football is so unpredictable at times with so many ups and downs during the season. One moment a team can be at the top of their game, leading the nation in all sorts of categories and making their way up the BCS rankings and the next moment that same team is licking their wounds after getting dominated by an unranked opponent.
The Oklahoma Sooners is perfect example of this at the beginning of this college football season as they came in with a lot of confidence as their Heisman trophy quarterback Sam Bradford was back for another season after neglecting to make the jump to the pros. With Bradford back the Sooners were thought to be at least a top five team throughout the season and on their way to a possible BCS championship, but they the roof started to cave in on the Sooners early when Bradford went down with a shoulder injury and never really fully recovered.
Another example of team that went from a BCS championship contender to just another good team is the Oregon Ducks who absolutely tore their conference rival USC Trojans apart last weekend with a 47-20 and lost to another PAC-10 conference opponent in the lowly Stanford Cardinals.
The Cardinals are no stranger to knocking off big time teams as of late as last season they were the team to knock the Trojans off their pedestal and end their BCS championship hopes, but this season it seems as that they have done it again to the Oregon Ducks with a huge 51-42 victory over the #8 Ducks.
The Ducks played well in this game, but the Cardinals had the last laugh as they were able to hold off their tough PAC-10 opponent. Cardinals running back Toby Gerhart was the player of the game in this one in my opinion as he drove the Oregon secondary crazy by rushing for a game high 223 yards and three touchdowns. Along with Gerhart impressive performance on the ground Cardinals quarterback also had a big game with 251 yards and two touchdowns.
Personally, I think college football needs to implement some sort of playoff system as soon as possible because this BCS crap doesn’t work in my opinion and some really good teams get the cold shoulder every single season, but I don’t believe that is going to happen anytime soon.
As for Oregon, their fate remains to be seen, but I am sure they will take a serious downgrade after this weekend’s disappointing loss to Stanford much like the way USC did last week after their loss to the Ducks.
