The NFL’s most sought after free agent is officially off the table after the Philadelphia Eagles seized the opportunity and signed lockdown corner Nnamdi Asomugha on Friday. Not only is this a serious upgrade to the Eagles’ secondary, but this move comes just one day after Philadelphia traded quarterback Kevin Kolb to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for defensive back Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.
With these two defensive beasts in the Philadelphia secondary and Asante Samuel, the Eagles may be just as good on defense as they are on offense next season. At this point in time, the Philadelphia Eagles could have the best secondary in the NFL and perhaps the best all-around defense.
This move was arguably the best move of any team in the offseason so far. The New England Patriots may have landed two Pro Bowlers in the same day by adding wide receiver Chad Ochocinco and defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth via trade, but the Philadelphia Eagles moves to upgrade the defense have been second to none thus far.
Reportedly, the Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to terms with Nnamdi Asomugha on a five-year deal that will pay him $6o million dollars with $25 million guaranteed. Ironically enough, this deal is $3 million shy of what Kevin Kolb got with the Arizona Cardinals.
So despite efforts by the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Jets to acquire him, Nnamdi Asomugha decided that the Philadelphia Eagles was a better fit for him.
Along with signing Nnamdi Asomugha on Friday, the Philadelphia Eagles also announced the free agent signings of tight end Donald Lee, wide receiver Johnnie Lee Higgins and defensive end Jason Babbin.
