The next time you see a soccer player rolling around on the pitch like he’s been hit been with a straight right hand by heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko or shot by a bazooka, you may want to compare him to hockey player Kevin Klein. The New York Rangers’ defenceman recently lost a part of his left ear during an NHL game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The 30-year-old Klein took a high stick to the head from Zach Sill in the first period. While it looked like he suffered a nasty cut, the team trainers suddenly realized that part of his ear was hanging off.

Klein headed or the Rangers dressing room and had the team doctor sew the ear back together. He then attached a plastic guard to his helmet and returned to the game in the second period and took a regular shift for the rest of the way. That act alone impressed most of the crowd at the Madison Square Garden in New York but Klein had one more surprise up his sleeve as he went on to score the game-winning goal at the 3:45 mark of overtime.

The native of Kitchener, Ontario admitted after the game that the stick to the head was quite painful, but it was only temporary. He visited a plastic surgeon the day after the game and Tweeted a photo of the doctor’s work and said everything has turned out fine. Klein has matured into one of the Rangers’ top defenceman this season and has also chipped in with his fair share of offence. Klein has six goals and four assists on the season for 10 points in 27 games. He leads the Rangers blue liners in scoring as well as in the plus/minus with a plus nine.

Three of his goals have been game winners and two of them have been scored in overtime. The three game-winners are tops for NHL defencemen so far this campaign. Klein began his NHL career with the Nashville Predators after they drafted him 37th overall in the 2003 NHL Draft. He was traded to the Rangers for Michael Del Zotto during the 2013/14 season. Klein’s previous highs for goals, assists, and points was four, 17, and 21, which he achieved in the 20011/12 season with Nashville.

Klein’s played in 460 career regular-season games and has 23 goals and 75 assists for 98 points. He also has four goals and nine assists for 13 points in 53 playoff games. Klein has quickly become a fan favourite in New York due to his consistent play and off-ice work in the local community. He’s only taken 122 minutes of penalties so far in his career, but this latest incident goes’ to show that he’s as tough as nails, just like most hockey players.
