After a nice run in college football this week where we hit all five of our selections (Oregon State, Alabama, Nebraska, Appalachian State, William & Mary) we’ll head back to the NHL for a Sunday afternoon contest between the Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

Both teams have been in very shaky form of late heading into this matchup.  The Rangers have  five of their last eight.  Their problem has been on the defensive end, going over in three of their last four games and allowing 18 goals in their past three games.  Detroit has lost five of seven and seven of ten, and they’ve had the opposite problem.  They’ve been unable to score, which makes it difficult to win in the NHL.  Detroit has gone under the total in nine of their last twelve games.  How bad has the Detroit offense been?  In the last ten games for the Red Wings they’ve only allowed more than 3 goals in regulation on one occasion, yet they’re 3-7 in that span.

So, to paraphrase Frank Sinatra who famously played a live show at Madison Square Garden (‘The Main Event’), ‘something’s gotta give’.  We think it’ll be the Rangers porous defense.  Both teams need a win and we like the veteran Detroit team to get it here.  The Wings are 13-3 in their last 16 games against the Broadway Blueshirts and on a 6-2 run at MSG.  Both teams played last night, with the Rangers winning at Buffalo and Detroit losing a shootout to New Jersey.  That makes the situation more urgent for Detroit and sets this play up even better.

At press time, 80% of the money in this matchup has come in on the Rangers.  To win consistently in sports betting you’ve got to be a contrarian and go against the public. Next time you go to Las Vegas take a look at all of those big hotels.  They didn’t build them off the backs of contrarians; they were built with money made from ‘the public’ or as we call them in the handicapping business ‘squares’.  This is no worse than an even matchup, and we think we Wings are a better team.  They’re moneyline underdogs and we’re going against the ‘public’.
