We’ve got a big weekend of sports betting action coming up. In addition to the hoops, hockey, baseball and soccer there’s a few other big events. On Friday we’ve got the Kentucky Oaks. Saturday is like Christmas for guys like me and we’ve got the Kentucky Derby and the Floyd Mayweather, Jr./Shane Mosley fight. We’ll definitely have a full analysis of the fight, and we’ll try to get you some solid intel from my horse racing sources on the big races for the weekend.
The action begins tonight with the second round of the NHL playoffs featuring the start of a Western Conference series between the San Jose Sharks and Detroit Red Wings. We’ve got a hockey betting position for you in game 1 from San Jose:
SAN JOSE SHARKS VS. DETROIT RED WINGS:
The Sharks have the first round ‘monkey’ off their back following a series win over Colorado and should be in much better shape mentally for a second round matchup with Detroit. Red Wings actually won the season series against the Sharks, with Detroit winning 3 of the 4 head to head contests this year. Overall, the Wings have won 8 of the last 12 head to head and 4 of the last 6 meetings at San Jose.
While Detroit is very much a live play in this series we don’t have much interest in a betting position due to the price. Just no value in a series play on either side. And while we thing the Red Wings could win this series, its a very tough spot for them in the first game. Sharks are well rested, with four days off between the end of the Colorado series and tonight’s game. The Red Wings, however, are in a nasty scheduling spot–due to a booking conflict with the Sharks’ home ice at HP Pavilion (for an Eagles concert, of all things) they had to do a very quick turnaround and play tonight to stay on schedule. So the Red Wings flew out of Phoenix immediately after their Game 7 win and will head back into their next series with only 1 day of rest. Fatigue notwithstanding, the difficulty from a mental and emotional standpoint of going from game 7 in a hard fought series back into another series on enemy ice should be readily apparent. Wings may end up winning the series, but based on the tough situational factors for them heading into this contest we like the Sharks to win Game 1 at home. We also like the game to go Over the total–Detroit only played one Under against the Coyotes and 5 of the last 6 head to head with the Sharks in San Jose have gone Over.
