So the NCAA hoop tournament worked out just like I told you it would and Duke will play Butler in the Championship Game on Monday night.  I’ll have my analysis and selection in that later today or early Monday.  At this very moment ESPN’s website has the headline ‘Couldn’t Script It Better’ with no sense of irony whatsoever.  We’ll also have some stuff for opening day baseball later today or early Monday.  As far as tonight’s ESPN game between the Yankees and Red Sox, I’m taking a position on New York.  In this post we’ll look at some NHL betting as the Calgary Flames head to Chicago to take on the Blackhawks.  The Flames are furiously trying to make the playoffs and have been playing…well…furiously in the past few games.  The Blackhawks playoff seeding is pretty well set.  Will the Flames make the postseason or will Mikka Kiprusoff and Jarome Iginla look like a couple of really big boobs?

This is sort of a reverse of the situation where you’re forced to pay a premium on a team that ‘needs’ to win.  Calgary has no margin for error whatsoever if they want to make the postseason.  Calgary has four games left and are currently tied with Colorado for the 8th and final playoff spot with 89 points.  Actually, if the season ended today the Avalanche would advance to the postseason since they hold the tiebreakers.  At this point, the Flames are making a more compelling case that they want to be in the playoffs.  They’ve won three straight and 6 of their last 10, while Colorado has lost four straight and are 3-6-1 in their last ten games.

So Calgary is a desperate team and they’ll head to the United Center on Sunday to face a team that isn’t quite so desperate.  They’ve all but clinched their division, which is going to get them one of the top three seeds in the West.  They’ve got an outside shot of catching San Jose, but they’ve got a 5 point edge on the other division leader (Vancouver).  So assuming they stay in front of Nashville they can do no worse than third in the West with the most likely scenario holding onto second.  Chicago is 4-4-2 in their last 10 games.  The Blackhawks have dominated this series, winning five straight and all three meetings this year.  That’s somewhat irrelevant here, however, as we’ve got a team fighting for their playoff life against a team that is pretty much set.  Calgary is still a  pitiful offensive team ranking 27th in the NHL but play nasty defense ranking 4th in the league.  Basically, we’re getting a good price on a team that needs this game against a home team that doesn’t.
