With the NBA on All Star break the NHL looks to finish off their action before taking their break for the Winter Olympic games.  We’ll have some more Olympic betting coverage in the next few days, and we may even have some NASCAR betting for Sunday’s Daytona 500.  Even if we don’t have any for the Daytona race, look for a ton of NASCAR betting stuff as the season progresses.  For now, we’ll stick to hockey and head to Buffalo, NY for Saturday’s game between the Sabres and the San Jose Sharks.

BUFFALO SABRES VS. SAN JOSE SHARKS

Buffalo has slumped in the standings since the first of the year, and now find themselves in 5th place in the Eastern Conference.  They’ve lost 10 of their L12 games and their biggest problem has been a lack of productivity on the offensive end.  Well, that and some unusually porous defense in their half of the ice.  As all NHL insiders know, if you can’t score goals and keep the other team from scoring goals you’re not going to win very many hockey games.  The Sharks, meanwhile, continue to dominate having won 9 of their L12 overall and managing to keep up with Washington during their epic 14 game winning streak.  San Jose has none of the problems that Buffalo does at the moment.  They’re scoring goals and keeping the other team from scoring, ranking near the top of both offensive and defensive goals per game.  You don’t have to be Don Cherry to know that if you score a lot and keep the other team from scoring you’re going to win a lot.

For all of their success, however, Buffalo has been a tough place for San Jose to play.  Sharks have lost 7 of the L8 meetings in upstate New York.  And we’re going to look to those games for a clue to their form and play this one ‘Over’ the total.  Both teams playing a lot of Over games lately–Sabres and Sharks have only 4 Unders in their L13 games–and 4 of the L7 meetings in Buffalo have gone Over.  These teams met in late January with a total of 7 goals scored and last February with 11 goals scored.  Good moneyline value on the Over as well.
