The Calgary Flames are currently mired in their longest losing streak of the year and things won’t get any easier for them as they head to Northern California to face the San Jose Sharks.  On Sunday night they lost at Anaheim for their fourth straight defeat and sixth in their past seven games.  San Jose is neck and neck with Chicago for the NHL’s best record–at the moment they trail the Blackhawks by two points.  We’ll take a NHL betting position in this game playing against the Flames’ recent form.

The Flames can’t buy a break right now.  They finally got some scoring output on Sunday against Anaheim but their defense was uncharacteristically shaky in a 5-4 loss.  It was only the second time in 23 games that Calgary had scored more than three goals.  The Flames have managed to prosper despite their offensive struggles due to their defense.  They’re #5 in the NHL in scoring defense, with San Jose right behind at #6.

Unlike the Flames, however, the Sharks have a potent offense to compliment their defense.  San Jose ranks #4 in the NHL in goals per game at 3.10, right behind Vancouver, Chicago and Washington.  They’re capable of playing the physical, grind it out style that the Flames prefer but in this case there’s no real reason for them to do so.  Calgary goaltender Mikka Kiprusoff is no doubt one of the best in the league, but has been streaky at times throughout his career.  For that reason, we’re looking for the Sharks to put a lot of pressure on him and look for them to score a lot of goals.

This series has trended ‘over’ the total in recent years with 7 of the last 12 meetings overall and 4 of the last 7 at San Jose going ‘over’.  With the Flames in a downward spiral we’ll look for this one to go ‘over’ as well.
