It’s still unclear if the NHL will allow players to participate in the next Winter Olympics in PyeongChang South Korea 2018 in. However, in the meantime, the top players in the world will be taking part in the World Cup of Hockey next year. The NHL recently announced the format of the tournament as well as its schedule. There will be two groups of four teams taking part in the preliminary round, which will take place from September 17th to 22nd.

Each of the teams will play the other group members once in a round-robin style competition. The top two squads from each of the groups will then advance to the semifinal stage, which will be held on September 24th and 25th. The first-place team in Group A will play the second-place team in Group B while the Group B winner will take on the second-place side from Group A. The two semifinal winners will then play off in a best-of-three series between September 27th and October 1st to determine the winner of the World Cup of Hockey.

To the disappointment of many hockey fans, the entire 2016 World Cup event will be played at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto Ontario, which is the home rink of the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs. Group A will be made up of Canada, the U.S., the Czech Republic and Team Europe. Group B will consist of Sweden, Russia, North America and Finland. The European team will be made up of European players who don’t hail from Russia, Sweden, Finland or the Czech Republic. The North American squad will contain players who are aged 23 and under and are Canadian or American.

The last World Cup of Hockey event took place in 2004. This event will use NHL officials and rules and will be played on an NHL-sized ice surface. Each team can name 23 players to the roster with three of them being goaltenders. The initial rosters of 16 players need to be handed in by March 1, 2016 with the final lineups being due on June 1st. The training camps for the squads will get underway on September 4th in various locations. The opening of the 2016/17 NHL season will be pushed back about a week to October 12th to give players time to recuperate from the World Cup event. However, NHL training camps will begin on September 22nd and last for the usual 20 days.

The six national sides will be selected by their country’s ice hockey federations and the Team Europe and North American squads will be selected by the NHL and the NHL Players’ Association. Non-NHL players are also allowed to play in the tournament, but most participants are expected to be NHL’ers or players who have been drafted by NHL clubs.
