NFL Thanksgiving: Do Any Underdogs Have a Shot?

Before the season started, it looked like at least two of the three NFL games on Thanksgiving would be pretty interesting, but now if records after 10 games are any indication they should all suck. We’re stuck with two 8-2 teams playing two 2-8 teams, and a 7-3 team playing a 3-7 team. Is there any hope for at least one of these games being competitive? Here’s an in-depth look so you can plan your holiday.

New England Patriots (8-2) at Detroit Lions (2-8) 12:30 PM EST on CBS

Vegas says we should expect a final score of Patriots 29, Lions 22.

On paper, the Patriots should kill the Lions, but after New England lost so badly in Cleveland two and a half weeks ago, there’s still a question of a let down. My money says the Patriots got that out of their system and should have this game well in hand before halftime.

New Orleans Saints (7-3) at Dallas Cowboys (3-7) 4:15 PM EST on FOX

Vegas says: Saints 27, Cowboys 24.

The Cowboys have won their last four Thanksgiving games, and they’ve won two straight since interim coach Jason Garrett took over for Wade Phillips. One of those games was against the Lions though. The Saints have been inconsistent this season, losing to crappy teams like the Cardinals and Browns, but I think they should be able to focus with the whole nation watching. The Saints may not put the Cowboys away until the fourth quarter, but they should prevail (and cover).

Cincinnati Bengals (2-8) at New York Jets (8-2) 8:20 PM EST on NFLN

Vegas says: Jets 27, Bengals 18

The Bengals have lost seven straight, but only last week’s loss in Buffalo came by more than eight points. The Jets have won three in a row since losing at home to the Packers, but each of those wins was against a struggling team and the Jets won by less than a touchdown. Does the spotlight get the Jets to play four quarters and put the Bengals away? Maybe, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bengals kept it close, especially since they remember ending last year with two losses to the Jets in a six-day stretch.
