When Brett Favre agreed to sign with the Minnesota Vikings this offseason many people were thinking, here we go again, but little did anyone know that Favre still had the skills to be one of the best quarterbacks in this league.
Minnesota seemed like the ideal place for Brett Favre to go to after a somewhat disappointing season with the New York Jets because the Vikings offense was very similar to the Green Bay Packers offense in which Favre played in for the majority of his NFL career. Not only was Favre familiar with the Vikings offense, but he also had arguably the best running back in the league in Adrian Peterson at his disposal and a promising young receiving core led by rookie Percy Harvin and Sidney Rice.Seemingly, all Favre had to do this season to make the Vikings a playoff team was hand off the football to Peterson and throw 10 to 15 passes a game while limiting his interceptions. Of course telling a quarterback of Favre’s caliber to only throw the football a handful of times is impossible as when he sees an opportunity for a touchdown he is going to take it instinctually and that he has this season with enormous success.
Not only has Brett Favre thrown for 21 touchdowns and just three interceptions so far this season, but he has led his Vikings to a 9-1 record and turned Minnesota into one of the best teams in the league and quite possibly a Super Bowl title contender.
This weekend against the Seattle Seahawks, Brett Favre had another impressive performance, perhaps his best game of the season, with four touchdowns and just three incomplete passes as the future hall of fame completed 22 of 25 passes in the 35-9 victory.
Needless to say, the Minnesota Vikings have been and continue to be red hot with Brett Favre behind center. They will have to play the New Orleans Saints at one point if they expect to make it through the playoffs, but right now they are sitting pretty atop the NFC North.
Here is a breakdown of the best games week 11:
Cincinnati Bengals @ Oakland Raiders: Raiders 20-17
Coming into this game the Cincinnati Bengals were one of the hottest teams in the league with a 7-2 record and 1st place in the arguably one of the toughest divisions in football in AFC North. That being said, week 11 against the lowly Oakland Raiders was supposed to be an easy win for the Bengals, but it didn’t turn out that way as Oakland was able to hang with the Bengals all game long.
Cincinnati was leading 17-10 with 33 seconds left and the Bengals seemed to be on their way to their eighth victory of the season until Raiders new starting quarterback Brad Gradkowski throw a game tying touchdown pass to wide receiver Louis Murphy. Then the biggest play of the game happen moments later when the Raiders kicked off to the Bengals Andre Caldwell who fumbled the football and gave the Raiders great field position after they recovered the football with 15 seconds to go which resulted in a game winning field goal by Sebastian Janikowski 20-17.
Cleveland Browns @ Detroit Lions: Lions 38-37
Week 11 had some compelling matchups, but perhaps the most unappealling of all the matchups in week 11 was two of the worst teams in the NFL going head to head in the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions. Both of these teams have had very forgettable season thus far, but that was to be expected. What wasn’t expected was that these two of the NFL’s worst teams going head to head was perhaps the game of the year.
Brady Quinn and rookie Matthew Stafford haven’t looked good this year, but in this game they looked like Pro Bowlers as they light up the scoreboard all game long with nine touchdown passes between them. Quinn had the best game of his career with 303 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Stafford had two interceptions, but finished the game with the win, 422 yards and five touchdowns.
Obviously it is only Stafford’s rookie season and this will probably the first of many great performances out of the young quarterback, but for Quinn this game was a breath of fresh air despite the loss as he has really struggled as a starter in this league.
Hopefully this game will help these two young quarterbacks finally get on the right track and become forces to be reckoned with in the NFL.
Other notable games in week 11:
Washington Redskins @ Dallas Cowboys: 7-6 Cowboys
Pittsburgh Steelers @ Kansas City Chiefs: 27-24 Chiefs
Atlanta Falcons @ New York Giants: 34-31 Giants
Indianapolis Colts @ Baltimore Ravens: 17-15 Colts
Philadelphia Eagles @ Chicago Bears: 24-20 Eagles
