Types of NFL Football Bets

Straight bets using point spreads, and money line bets are the most common ways to bet on football. With that said, there are many different ways to bet on NFL football games. As the most popular sport for US punters, online sportsbooks offer dozens of ways to bet on games.

It might seem complicated at first, but most types of bets are actually pretty simple to understand. The information below has been written to help new bettors understand each type of bet as easily as possible.

Straight Bets

When you place straight bets, you’re betting that one team will win by the point spread. For example, if the Colts are -6.5 against the Chargers, the Colts will need to win by 7 or more points to cover the spread. If they win by 6 or fewer points (or lose the game), anyone who took the Chargers would win.

Straight bets generally have odds set at $1.10 to $1.00. So, it would require a bet of $110 to win $100 profit ($210 total return). The $10 difference is the house take, also called the vig (vigorish), or juice. The vig is how the sportsbook makes money.

Money Line Bets

With money line bets, you are betting on one team to win, without any point spread involved. It doesn’t matter how many points a team wins by, they just have to win. In money line bets, the odds look something like this:

New York Giants -180 (Favorite)

Detroit Lions +160 (Underdog)

The negative (-) money line is always the favorite. Positive money lines (+) indicate the underdog. Negative money lines show the amount needed to bet in order to win $100. Positive money lines indicate how much you will win on a $100 bet. Bets of these sizes are not required, they are simply a system used to proportionally determine payouts.

Based on the money lines listed above, you would need to bet $180 on the Giants to win $100 in profit ($280 total return). For the Lions, a bet of $100 would win $160 in profit ($260 total return).

One of the easiest ways to bet on football is on the over/under. Online sportsbooks determine a number of total points they expect both teams to score, then add them together. Your job is to decide if that number is too high or too low.

For example, if the over/under for the Raiders/Chiefs game is set at 38 points and you think they’ll score more, then you should bet the over. If you think the two teams will score fewer than 38 points, you should take the under. It doesn’t matter which team wins or how many points either team scores – all that matters is the total number of points scored in the game. It’s that simple.

If the Raiders win 27-13 for a total of 40 points, anyone betting the over would be a winner. Anyone who took the under would lose. If the final score was 24-14 for a total of 38 points, the result would be a push and bettors would get their money back.

Over/under bets are based on 11/10 odds, so a $110 bet would be required to win $100 ($210 total return).

Parlay Bets

When you make a parlay bet, you are betting on the results of 2 or more games on one bet, requiring each team to cover the point spread. This means that each team in your parlay must cover the spread to win your bet. For example, if you pick the Jaguars to beat the Eagles and the Cowboys to beat the Packers, both of your picks must cover the spread. At most online sportsbooks, parlay bets can be combined with other sports, not just football.

The reason people choose parlay bets is because the odds are better than winning multiple, individual bets. There is some variation between sportsbooks, but most pay 2.6/1 on two team parlays, 6/1 on 3 team parlays, 12/1 on 4 team parlays, and 24/1 on 5 team parlays. A $50, 4 team winning parlay bet would result in a $600 win.

Some online sportsbooks allow up to 12 team parlays, offering massive odds up to 600/1. A $50 winning bet on a 12 team parlay could result in a $30,000 win.

Similar to parlay bets in that multiple teams must be selected and all picks must win. Teasers are different in that they allow bettors to add or subtract points to the spread. Of course this results in reduced odds, but better chances to win. Teasers can typically move the spread by 6, 6.5 or 7 points, reducing odds with each 1/2 point.

In comparison to parlays, a 6 point, 2 game teaser typically pays 10/11 instead of 2.6/1 for a parlay. A three team teaser pays 9/5 versus 6/1 on a parlay. 4 team teasers pay 3/1 versus 12/1 parlays. 5 team teasers pay 9/2 versus 24/1 parlay bets.

If you prefer to win more often, but lower payouts, choose a teaser. If you’re going for the big win, choose the parlay.
