The All-Pro teams representing the NFC and AFC combined for 96 points in Sunday’s Pro Bowl, but it was a defensive player who took home the Most Valuable Player award. Washington Redskins defensive back DeAngelo Hall was named MVP after intercepting one pass and returning a fumble for a touchdown to help the NFC to a 55-41 win.
In the second quarter, Hall scooped up a fumble by Patriots receiver Wes Welker and ran it back 34 yards for a score to put the NFC up 28-0. The NFC built a 42-0 lead before the AFC finally scored with 1:54 left in the first half. Matt Cassel of the Kansas City Chiefs threw two touchdown passes for the AFC in the game’s final two minutes to make the score somewhat respectable. Cassel, Phillip Rivers of the Chargers and Peyton Manning of the Colts combined to throw five interceptions for the AFC.
Hall is the third Redskin to win Pro Bowl MVP honors, joining lineman Gene Brito (1957) and quarterback Joe Theismann (1984), and won a Cadillac for his trouble. “I was just about to buy another SUV,” said the 37-year-old defensive back, “so to come out here and grab one for free, I like that.”
Superstar quarterback Michael Vick of the Philadelphia Eagles started for the NFC but was probably holding back to avoid injury. Vick did not run the ball at all, but did complete five of 10 passes and threw no interceptions.
