When the New York Rangers edged the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 at home at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, May 16 it was their 15th consecutive one-goal game in the playoffs, dating back to last season, which sets an NHL record. In addition, the Rangers have played 13 playoff games so far this postseason with all of them being decided by a single goal and nine of them ending 2-1 scores. The Rangers and Tampa Bay are playing in the Eastern Conference Finals after New York managed to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins in five games in the first round and then edged the Washington Capitals in the full seven games in the second round.
The Rangers also made history against the Capitals as they were trailing in the series three games to one and came back to win. They were also down 3-1 to the Penguins last season and managed to come back to take the series. This means the Rangers are the first and only club to bounce back from 3-1 series deficits in two consecutive seasons. The 2-1 win over Washington in game seven at Madison Square Garden gives the Rangers an overall record of 9-5 in game sevens. They are 7-0 in game sevens at home and all seven games have come since 1992. The Rangers are the only NHL team to play four game sevens at home and win all of them.
New York trailed the Capitals 1-0 in their deciding game last week and won it in overtime. It was the first time the Rangers have ever won a game seven after falling behind. The last time the Rangers were beaten in a game seven was back in the 2008/09 campaign when the Capitals beat them in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. Since then, New York has won all six of their game sevens, which ties the league record set between 1949 and 1964 by the Detroit Red Wings. The Boston Bruins also achieved the feat between 1983 and 1994.
The Rangers are now 14-3 in their past 17 playoff games in which they’ve faced elimination. They’ve won eight of their past nine games when facing elimination during the past two seasons. The league record over a two-year period is nine, which is held by the New York Islanders from 1975 to 76. The last time the Rangers failed to win when facing elimination came in the Stanley Cup Final last year against the Los Angeles Kings. The Rangers also own the record of winning 10 straight games at home when facing elimination, dating back to the 2007/08 campaign.
Rangers’ goaltender Henrik Lundqvist of Sweden has a record of 6-1 in game sevens along with a goals-against average of 0.97 , a save percentage of 96.6 and a shutout. He’s won all of his last half dozen game sevens dating back to 2011/12 which is an NHL record for most consecutive wins. He also set a record by allowing just one or fewer goals during each of those games. His goals-against average of 0.97 in game sevens in the lowest in league history. His six career wins in game sevens ties him with Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur for the most ever.
