NBA Trade: Knicks Get Tracy McGrady in 8-Player Deal

The NBA trade deadline has come and gone and the one player that was rumored to be definitely on his way out via trade is the only player that didn’t get dealt on Thursday afternoon. Amare Stoudemire will remain in a Phoenix Suns uniform for at least the second half of the NBA season before heading into free agency this summer as GM Steve Kerr didn’t think any trade offer was worth sending his All-Star forward/center packing.

Even though Stoudemire will stay with the Phoenix Suns for the time being, a lot of NBA teams made deals before the trade deadline on 3pm EST on Thursday.

Perhaps the biggest deal to get done in terms of upgrading a squad was Antawn Jamison being traded by the Washington Wizards to play alongside LeBron James with the Cleveland Cavaliers, but there was one deal that went down before the horn sounded that will drastically change the look of the Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings and the New York Knicks.

Coming into Thursday’s deadline, the Houston Rockets were on the verge of making a deal that would finally send their injury prone superstar Tracy McGrady elsewhere, but nothing had been set in stone and a lot of parts of the proposed deal had to be rebuffed in order to pull the trigger on the trade that would ultimately send McGrady to the New York Knicks.

Here are the details of the 8-player deal:

Kevin Martin (Kings), Hilton Armstrong (Kings), Jared Jefferies (Knicks) and Jordan Hill (Knicks) to the Houston Rockets

Tracy McGrady (Rockets) and Sergio Rodriguez (Kings) to New York Knicks

Carl Landry (Rockets), Joey Dorsey (Rockets), and Larry Hughes (Knicks) to Sacramento Kings

In my opinion, all three of these teams come out pretty well in this deal as the New York Knicks will now have the most cap space in the NBA this summer with McGrady ($23 million), Al Harrington ($10 million) and Chris Duhon ($6 million) salaries coming off the books and will be able to offer big name free agents like LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire and Dwyane Wade huge deals in the offseason.
