NBA Trade: Clippers Ship Marcus Camby to the Blazers

The NBA trade deadline is looming and a lot of teams are looking to make deals before Thursday, February 18th, but even though everyone is keeping their eyes on what the Cleveland Cavaliers and Phoenix Suns, there are plenty of other teams flying under radar that are looking to wheel and deal.

The Los Angeles Clippers have looked good at times this season with some impressive play out of All-Star center Chris Kaman and Baron Davis getting back to form, but the Clippers are still amongst the worst teams in the league and are headed for yet another disappointing season.

This season started off pretty rough for Baron Davis and company when they learned that their number one overall pick and supposed savior of the franchise in Blake Griffin went down with a fractured knee cap and would ultimately miss his entire rookie season with the Clippers. This was typical news for the struggling Clippers as they seem to be an NBA franchise that is destined to fail time and time again.

Despite Griffin being out for the season, the Clippers have shown signs of promise this season when they beat some of the elite teams in the league like the Boston Celtics and the defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers, but it didn’t take long for the lowly Clippers to show their true colors as they slowly slipped back into mediocrity in the Western Conference once again.

With Chris Kaman quickly turning into one of the best centers in the West, at least while he is healthy, the Clippers really didn’t have much room left for an aging Marcus Camby and with the defensive minded center get on in years, the team figured this would be a good time to unload the money coming to Camby and pick up a good backup point guard and a solid young forward in Travis Outlaw from the Portland Trailblazers.

Another condition of the trade between the Blazers and the Clippers was that the Portland had to send $1.5 million to Los Angeles while also taking on the $2 million dollars in incentives due to Camby at season’s end.

All of these players are also in the final year of their contracts.
