Steve Nash is well known as being one of the greatest basketball players to ever grace a court. It’s also a well-known fact that the 41-year-old South African-born player has a passion for soccer. The All-Pro guard has traded in his basketball shoes for a pair of football boots as the future Hall of Famer was set to make his debut for the B team of the famous New York Cosmos in July 5th. Nash retired from the NBA back in March following 19 glorious seasons in the world’s top basketball competition. He’s also ranked number three in the league in career assists.
Reports out of the New York Daily News stated that Nash has been practicing with the Cosmos’ team in the National Premier Soccer League. The team took on Rhode Island in Uniondale, New York on the 5th with Nash named on the roster. Nash is a part owner of the Vancouver Whitecaps of North America’s Major League Soccer (MLS). Even though he was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Nash did most of his growing up in Canada. The Cosmos play in North America’s second tier of soccer in the NASL (North American Soccer League) and as of July 5 the B team was unbeaten with eight wins and a draw under their belt.
Nash isn’t the only member of his family who plays soccer as his brother Martin played for Canada’s national squad in the past and enjoyed a 15-year pro career before he hung up his boots back in 2010. Steve was named to the NBA All-Star team eight times and also took home the league’s MVP Award twice. In addition, he led the league in assists on five different occasions.
The Cosmos B team hammered the Rhode Island Reds 9-0 on July 5th and while Nash’s name was on the eligible roster as a midfielder, there’s no word as of yet if he made his debut. Nash’s name wasn’t mentioned in the game-report article on the Cosmos’ official website, but the club still has two more matches to go before the season concludes. And since the Cosmos have clinched their division with the 9-0 win they’ll also be participating in the league playoffs. Sooner or later, Nash is bound to make his soccer debut at the age of 41.
