Nathan Cleverly of Wales will take on Karo Murat of Iraq in a WBO light-heavyweight title elimination fight at the LG Arena in Birmingham, England on Sept. 18. Both men are unbeaten as the 23-year-old Cleverly enters the ring with a record of 19-0 with 9KO’s and Murat, who now lives in Germany, has a record of 22-0 with 13 KO’s.

The Welshman Cleverly will be is taking a slight step-up in class with this bout against Murat, but now’s the time to do it if he wants to steadily improve and fight for a world title in the near future. Cleverly looked like an average prospect back in 2005 when he turned pro, but has improved quite a bit over the past couple of years and could end up being a solid contender.

He’s still pretty young at 23, but can legitimately be considered as a prospect on the light-heavyweight scene. Cleverly now sits down on his punches more and picks his shots better. His power is improving and even though he has only nine knockouts on his record, six of them were reeled off all in a row in his last six bouts. Cleverly should be used to the big-fight atmosphere as he’s already won the European, Commonwealth, and British titles.

Murat is a former European super-middleweight champion and has beaten former world champ Cristian Sanavia twice in title fights. He only moved up to into the light-heavyweight division last year and has reeled off three wins in a row at his new weight.

Murat usually moves forward pretty slowly with his hands held high and throws his punches flurries instead of a steady stream. He’s a little predictable and can be outworked, but always manages to come out a winner.

Cleverly will go into the ring with advantages in height and reach advantages as well as speed, work rate, and boxing skills. Both fighters have about the same power, but aren’t really one-punch knockout artists.

Cleverly hasn’t really had his chin tested yet or been under intense pressure, so Murat will have to see what Cleverly has. Murat has a pretty strong chin and is hard to discourage during a fight.

Murat protects his head quite well, but sometimes leaves himself open for body shots and uppercuts. Cleverly might be able to take advantage of this while Murat should attempt to push him back and pressure him with flurries.

This should be a pretty close bout, but Cleverly’s more or less fighting at home and has the skill to take the fight on points over 12 rounds.

Online bookie William Hill has Cleverly favoured with odds of him winning set at 2/7. A victory for Murat is posted at 5/2 and a draw comes in at 28/1.
