Nadal wins Wimbledon again

I said it in my first Wimbledon post on Sportsuntapped and here I am to say it again, Rafael Nadal indeed won Wimbledon 2010. He beat Tomas Berdych in straight sets, 6-3 7-5 6-4 and he wasn’t broken once.

Nadal had his big problems in the tournament early on, coming from two sets to one down in two matches, but as soon as he reached the quarterfinals he was impossible to beat. Perhaps most impressive was the way he dispatched Andy Murray in the semifinals, also in three sets.

Berdych came in to the match today with two great straight sets win himself, against Federer and Djokovic, but the moment and also Nadal seemed to get to him in the final. He couldn’t hit as freely as before and the wind might also have made it more difficult for him. Despite losing he should be very happy about making some amazing progress the last few months, first reaching the semis in the French Open and then the final in Wimbledon. This will boost him up to nr 8 in the rankings.

Talking about rankings Nadal now makes it clearer who is the number one player and you can’t help but think what would have happened if he was completely fit in 2009, would he have gotten double then as well? I think Federer has a lot to prove now if he wants to become number one again. Some very interesting questions to ask and think about before we kick off the American hardcourt season:

Can Nadal win the only slam that is elluding him?
Will Federer be back to try to win at least one slam in 2010 (he at least wins one every year since 2003!)
Can Berdych keep up his form? Then he will be very dangerous on the fast hardcourts.
How will these four dangerous players perform Isner, Soderling, Cilic, or Querrey?
Can Djokovic fix his serve?

    Which one is that?

“Will Federer be back to try to win at least one slam in 2010 (he at least wins one every year since 2003!)”

I don’t think Federer will win anything this year. He is playing like Tiger Woods post scandal only without a scandal.

Nadal has yet to win US Open. If he does he will win what the tennis world calls a career slam, winning all the four slams although not in the same year.

Well, Federer has actually already won a slam this year, as he won Australian Open in January. I don’t know how I could forget that, but it feels quite long ago and the Federer of that tournament and the Federer of the rest of the year is not the same person, despite (hopefully) not having slept with 20 odd women.

Maybe he is injured, maybe he has just lost some of that fantastic confidence and winning aura he had before. It will be interesting to see how he does in the end of the year. But I predict a dark horse winning the US Open, not Nadal, not Federer, not Murray and not Djokovic.

Thanks for reading and commenting by the way!

Nadal played very well in the end of the tournament…Nadal is only 24 years of age and great career ahead……
