Due to the depth of talent in this year’s NFL draft, we could see a record amount of trades beginning Thursday night. The rumors about which teams want to move up or down the board continue to fly nonstop. Will the Rams hold onto the top spot and select Sam Bradford? Are the Chiefs really willing to part with the number five pick? Is Jacksonville ready to bail out from ten? All will be revealed in about 36 hours.
Only a handful of teams have enough ammunition to slide into the top fifteen. Let’s take a closer look at who might be on the move in what promises to be an exciting opening round.
Philadelphia Eagles – The Birds own five of the first 87 picks. Many pundits speculate they are looking to slip into the top ten to select either Eric Berry or Earl Thomas. It would be costly to do so, but for a chance to replace the departed Brian Dawkins once and for all, Andy Reid might pull the trigger.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers – The Bucs are tied for the most total picks with twelve, including the 35th and 42nd selections in the second-round. After grabbing one of the elite defensive tackles with the number three pick, they could easily move back into first-round to snag another top-rated prospect.
Denver Broncos – By virtue of the Brandon Marshall trade, the Broncos now possess three of the first 45 picks. Nobody really knows what Josh McDaniels will do, but he certainly has enough to engineer a headline grabbing deal if he so chooses. However, Denver must fill a lot of holes, so standing pat would be prudent.
New England Patriots – Bill Belichick is a master at stockpiling picks. This time around he has an even dozen, so expect some maneuvering. Three second-round picks has me thinking the Pats will jump into the top fifteen to land an elite player. Dez Bryant makes sense. Randy Moss isn’t getting any younger, and Wes Welker is still recovering from a shredded knee.
San Francisco 49ers – Two first-rounders and the 17th spot in round two could entice the Niners to vault into the top five. Players like Jimmy Clausen, Eric Berry and CJ Spiller are definitely on their radar. New GM Trent Baalke could make a name for himself with a bold move.
