Coming into week 12 the undefeated New Orleans Saints and the 7-3 New England Patriots were considered two of the best teams in the NFL, but the Saints, unlike the Patriots, had yet to face a worthy opponent this season until they met up with Tom Brady and company on Monday night football.
Drew Brees and company have been torching opposing defenses all season long as the leading candidate for this season’s NFL MVP has been near unstoppable behind center for the Saints.
Tom Brady on the other hand has had a good season ever since he lit up the scoreboard against the Tennessee Titans in week six with six touchdowns, but after the loss to the Indianapolis Colts in week 10 the New England Patriots aren’t looking like the Super Bowl contending team that they once appeared to be in my opinion.
Despite losing the edge a bit after the loss to the Colts, the Patriots are still sitting pretty at 7-3 and 1st place in the AFC East coming into this Monday night matchup against the unbeaten New Orleans Saints.
The Achilies heel of the Patriots this season has been their defense which has seven new starters after future hall of famers like Teddy Bruschi and Rodney Harrison called it quits and Mike Vrabel and Richard Seymour were traded in the offseason. With these guys gone the defense has been exposed and New England has been able to compliment their high powered offense led by Tom Brady, Randy Moss and Wes Welker.
With that being said Drew Brees and the Saints were licking their chops with the opportunity to light up the Patriots secondary and that they did as Brees had perhaps his best performance of the season with 371 yards, five touchdown passes and just five incomplete passes out of 23 thrown.
Drew Brees had an MVP performance against the New England Patriots, but Tom Brady had the complete opposite as he struggled all game long against the Saints secondary who forced him to throw two interceptions and not a single touchdown.
Even though the Patriots weren’t able to get the air attack going like they usually do, New England’s running game was really their only form of offense against New Orleans as running back Laurence Maroney scored the only two touchdowns for the Patriots.
Along with the two rushing touchdowns, the Patriots were able to get one field goal as weel, but surprisingly the Saints defense basically just shutdown the Patriots offense. With this win over New England I believe that the New Orleans Saints are arguably the best team in the NFL. The Minnesota Vikings and the Indianapolis Colts have been very impressive up to this point, but honestly I think they have got nothing on Drew Brees and his New Orleans Saints.
There are only five games left in the regular season for the New Orleans Saints, but I believe that the Drew Brees and company will go undefeated for the duration of the season before heading into the playoffs. The next big challenge for the Saints is against the NFC East leading Dallas Cowboys in week 15.
