Coming into week 15′s Monday night football matchup, the New York Giants and the Washington Redskins were two NFC East teams heading in completely different directions as the Redskins seem to be headed to some serious rebuilding starting with head coach Jim Zorn and the Giants are fighting for their playoff lives!
Usually when any NFC East teams go head to head it is an all out battle, but with one team in desperate need of some wins to finish out the regular season and the other just trying to stop the bleeding. Needless to say, a blowout was in the making as the Washington Redskins had no idea what Eli Manning and the New York Giants had in store for them.
If the Giants didn’t win this game against the Redskins, their playoff hopes were basically out of the window, but with the win they still have an outside chance of clinching one of the final playoff spots in the NFC Wildcard.
All season long the Giants have struggled trying to get a consistent passing game going, sometimes Eli Manning dominates and other times New York has to resort to the running game with Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw. This week, Eli Manning and the Giants passing game was working to perfection as they absolutely lit up the Redskins secondary!
Not only was the passing game working with Manning throwing for three touchdowns and 268 yards with no interceptions, but the passing game was able to open up after they established a solid running game with Ahmad Bradshaw coming out of the backfield. Bradshaw had two early rushing touchdowns to put the Giants on top 14-0 and they never looked back as they continued scored and were able to score 45 points on the lowly Washington Redskins.
Despite having absolutely no answer for the Giants offensive onslaught, the Redskins were able to score two touchdowns of their own, but made extremely bad decisions on offense all night long with some plays that will go down as some of the biggest bonehead plays of the season.
Yes, Washington did score two touchdowns off a Fred Davis receiving touchdown and a Quinton Gather rushing touchdown, but the PAT attempt after the Davis touchdown failed and the two point conversation attempt after the Gather touchdown also failed leaving the Redskins with just 12 points.
If that weren’t bad enough, the Redskins tried to pull off a fake field goal play late in the game that went horribly wrong with left four Giants pass rushers completely unguarded and a punter scared to death throwing the football into quadruple coverage.
Even though the 45 points was impressive and breathed new life into the New York Giants after this Monday night, this game will almost certainly be remembered for how bad the Washington Redskins have been this season.
Unless a miracle happens, I believe Jim Zorn will get the boot very soon!
