The New England Patriots seemed to wrap up another AFC East title with their big road win over the New York Jets last Sunday night. Now they host the defending AFC West champion Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football as 15-point favorites, and it seems like New England’s biggest concern should be avoiding a letdown against a 4-5 KC team that seems to be in disarray.

The Patriots and Chiefs haven’t met in the regular season since the opening week of the 2008 season, the game Tom Brady was injured in and lost for the year. Matt Cassel took over for the rest of the season, then got traded to the Chiefs, where he’s done okay until being injured last week. That leaves backup Tyler Palko, a former Pitt Panther who has four career NFL games and 13 career NFL passes under his belt, to face the mighty Patriots.

Even before the Chiefs lost Cassel, they’ve lost two straight at home, getting blown out by the previously winless Miami Dolphins and losing to the Broncos in a game that the opposing quarterback, some Tebow guy, completed only two passes the entire game. The 6-3 Patriots were upset on the road earlier this season by the Buffalo Bills, but it’s hard to see them faltering that much against an unknown quarterback.

The spread makes things tricky though – the Patriots hadn’t won a game by more than 14 points all season until last week’s 37-16 win over the Jets. On the other hand, three of Kansas City’s five losses have been by 28 points or more. Still, I’d be tempted to take the Chiefs to cover.
