North America’s Major League Soccer (MLS) is proposing a tournament between teams from its league and the English Premier League. MLS has been around for 20 years now and has grown quite a bit since its infancy. The league has attracted numerous star players from other parts of the world and has landed a decent television deal which broadcasts its games across the globe. Several English clubs usually take part in preseason tours in North America before the European season kicks off and Don Garber, the MLS commissioner, feels the time is right to create a formal type of competition between the two leagues.

Garber said MLS has already held talks with the Premier League to feel it out when it comes to the idea of an official tournament. The Premier League confirmed that talks have been held, but said nothing official has been discussed as of yet. Garber added that MLS teams could possibly play squads from other top European Leagues, but right now the Premier League appears to be the best option. Garber told the press, “I would love to find a way that we could play our cup champion and our league champion against an FA Cup and league champion in a tournament and play it in New York City every year or every four years.”

Garber is hoping that MLS will be as well known as the Premier League, Spain’s La Liga and the Italian Serie A in another 10 years’ time. There could be some scheduling problems to iron out though since the English season runs from August to May and the MLS typically starts in March or April and winds up its cup competition in November. Garber said MLS fans are very familiar with the Premier League and its players and former England captain and Manchester United midfielder David Beckham had a lot to do with that. Beckham signed with the Los Angeles Galaxy back in 2007 and helped the league gain recognition and credibility.

Other Premier League stars have since joined MLS clubs, such as Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Robbie Keane. Beckham is also planning on launching an MLS expansion franchise in the Miami, Florida area in the next year or so. However, he’s having a hard time finding a suitable place for a stadium at the moment as some local residents are against the building of a new stadium in downtown Miami. Garber is hoping that more Premier League players may sign with MLS clubs once Beckham’s new club is up and running.

In the meantime, the sport of soccer in general and MLS in particular are growing in popularity in the U.S. Both the men’s and women’s national teams draw huge crowds wherever they play and a tournament with Premier League clubs could be on the horizon.
