Many sports fans think things are getting a little ridiculous these days in this overly politically-correct world. Over in America we’ve seen pro sports clubs such as the NFL’s Washington Redskins and the Atlanta Braves and Cleveland Indians of MLB labeled as racist due to the names of their teams. The clubs themselves along with their fans point out that the nicknames of the squads are obviously in honour of native Americans since no sports team would name themselves after somebody they don’t respect.
In Cleveland, the local baseball club is known as the Indians and its mascot and logo is Chief Wahoo, which is basically a grinning, big-toothed caricature. Over the years complaints about the name and the logo have been made by Native American activist groups, but according to Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig, nobody has complained to him about it. Selig was asked about the issue during the league’s annual All-Star break and he claimed that the Cleveland franchise has conducted several studies and polls over the years and the club said there isn’t a problem.
Back in 2013 the Cleveland Indians admitted that they were aware of protests against the logo and name and released a statement regarding them. The team said it is aware of both sides of the argument and realizes the fans have a long-lasting attachment to the logo and name. They added that studies are carried out on a regular basis and the club has no plans of changing their logo and/or name in the near future.
Selig, who will soon be stepping down from his job as the boss of MLB, said since the league hasn’t received any official complaints it will be up to the individual teams such as the Indians and Braves to decide whether or not they’ll be making any changes to their names, logos, and mascots.
