Nice baseball betting winner on Anaheim yesterday as they cashed a ticket over the Yankees as a hefty +180 or higher underdog.  We’ll play a small favorite today, but its another case where we’re going against a big ‘public’ team.  But more about that in a moment…

As a handicapper, I may enjoy handicapping baseball more than any other sport.  I’m not really sure why this is the case–its definitely not the easiest sport I handicap and, in fact, may be the most challenging.  Then again, that may be why its so enjoyable.  There’s so many different handicapping methodologies at your disposal with baseball that its more engaging than the pointspread sports which don’t provide as much creativity.  More so than any other sport, baseball also evolves throughout the year in terms of the handicapping process.  Right now, we’re looking for situations where linesmakers are overreacting to the short term performances and finding value prices in spots that were profitable a year ago.  Within a month or so, we’ll put away last season’s numbers and start to evaluate the matchup based on this year’s numbers.  Anyway, with baseball underway, the playoffs starting in hoops and hockey and horse racing in full swing this is one of my favorite times of the year.

Today we’re featuring a cute little dog sitting in the lap of his MILF owner at the ballpark (if you want the uncropped pic to enjoy the full MILF-yness go here).  And we’ll feature the excellent Homeward Bound Dog Rescue of Minnesota, a no-kill adoption and placement organization that has found homes for over 12,000 dogs since 1991.  If  you’re in Minnesota, go adopt a dog.

We’ll take a look at an American League game between the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox:

MINNESOTA TWINS (FRANCISCO LIRIANO) VS. BOSTON RED SOX (TIM WAKEFIELD):

Along with the Yankees the Sox are one of the sports perpetually overpriced ‘public’ teams.  They’re only 4-4 on the season and they’re facing a Minnesota Twins team that’s something of a surprise in the early going.  Despite earning a postseason berth and winning the division last year.  There’s something of a perception that the rest of the AL Central did more to ‘lose’ the division than anything else.  The Twins are so far living up to their billing as division winners, leading the AL Central with a 6-2 mark.

Neither starter has pitched very well in these head to head matchups, with Liriano getting clobbered in two starts early last season.  Of course the Twins got off to a horrible start last year as a team and that didn’t help.  Boston had a losing record on the road last year (39-42) while Minnesota was solid at home (49-33).  Of greater importance for our purposes is the fact that Boston lost money on the road last year (-7.6 units) while Minnesota was a big cha-ching against RHP (+11.3 units).  With a split in the first two games we’ll look for the Twins to win the rubber match in their new ballpark.  Note that David Ortiz won’t play today, as he’s ‘taking some time off’ to get his mental game straightened out.  Mike Lowell will be the Sox DH for this game.  I’ve always liked ‘Big Papi’, but at age 40 he could be nearing the end of the line.

PLAY MINNESOTA (LIRIANO) -120 OVER BOSTON (WAKEFIELD)
