Mike Leach has been suspended indefinitely, pending an investigation launched into allegations that the Texas Tech head coach ordered sophomore wide receiver Adam James to be isolated on two separate occasions.
Leach allegedly ordered a trainer to lock James (son of former New England Patriots running back and current ESPN analyst Craig James) inside of a guarded electrical closet for three hours after suffering a concussion.
An anonymous source close to the family has told the media that the 20-year-old kid was ordered by his doctor not to practice due to a concussion that he suffered on December 16. The source also specified that Leach instructed a trainer to place James in the “darkest place, to clean out the equipment and to make sure that he could not sit or lean. He was confined for three hours.”
Coach Leach, who will not be present for this Friday’s Alamo Bowl, apparently ordered the same treatment two days later.
Ted Legitt, Leach’s attorney, says James was secluded on the two occasions, but the circumstances are being portrayed incorrectly. He claims that James “was placed in an equipment room as it was much cooler and darker” and “after a doctor had examined him and returned him to the field.”
Leach, of course, has not responded to any of the allegations. Why the hell would he put a kid in a closet anyway? Was he trying to punish James for being injured? Is this some weird, new-fangled treatment method?
