Last Thursday, three men started the WGC-Bridestone Invitational with a chance to leave with the top spot in the Official World Golf Rankings.  The best those three guys could do was a T46 in a tough 81-man field.  Hunter Mahan, who dates a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, ended up winning the tournament, clinching a US Ryder Cup spot and moving up to #12 in the world rankings.

Tiger Woods kept his number one ranking for at least another week, despite finishing T78 with a career worst 72-hole score of +18. World #3 Lee Westwood played his first two rounds with Tiger Woods, and was playing nearly as badly.  But Westwood says his right calf was injured and he pulled out of the no-cut tournament after Friday’s round.  Westwood will also miss this week’s PGA Championship, the year’s final major.

With Tiger struggling, world #2 Phil Mickelson only needed to finish in the top four to finally take the #1 ranking.  After three rounds, Phil was T10, two shots back of fourth place and four shots off the lead.  But Sunday, he looked an awful lot like the new Tiger and shot a final round 78 to finish T46.

World #16 Padraig Harrington won’t let one crazy weekend change his mind — he still thinks Woods, Mickelson and Westwood are golf’s three best players:

Lee Westwood is the most consistent player in the world. Phil is playing the best golf in the world when he plays well. And Tiger is the best player in the world … It’d be a very naive and and a very foolish man to write Tiger Woods off.

Mickelson gave indications that he thinks Tiger will continue struggling for awhile, but sounded less confident about his own game. ““If I keep finishing ahead of [Tiger] every week eventually [I’ll pass him], but the problem is there’s guys behind me that will pass me because I’m not playing well enough right now,” Mickelson said.
