On Monday, the New York Mets informed pitcher Oliver Perez that he was being released. Perez wasn’t surprised, and he couldn’t be that bummed, since he’ll still make $12 million this year in the final year of the three-year, $36 million he signed before the 2009 season. Over the past two seasons, he went 3-8 with an ERA over 6.80 in 31 appearances.

“When they told me, I almost knew what they were going to tell me,” said the 29-year-old pitcher from Mexico. “It’s just one of those days. I don’t feel great. But I’m not going to quit. I think I’ve got more career.

Perez had nothing but kind parting words for the Mets organization and its long suffering fans.

They gave me an opportunity – they were fair with me. When I came here they were going to give me the opportunity to be a starter, and I didn’t do anything great. They moved me to the bullpen, trying to be a lefty specialist, and the last game that was a real horrible job. … The people everywhere are free to say all that stuff. I know I did everything I can to get better, and the result doesn’t work right.

The Mets will also be paying second baseman Luis Castillo $6 million to not play for them this season. After being released by the Mets, Castillo has signed a minor league contract with the rival Philadelphia Phillies.
