The New York Mets took a 4-0 lead in the first inning of Wednesday’s game against the Detroit Tigers, and never trailed as they went on to win 16-9 to continue a four-game winning streak powered by tons of runs. The Mets have set a franchise record with 52 runs scored over those four games, scoring 14 or more three times and no fewer than eight runs, and also winning by seven runs or more three times.
After closing out their last series in Texas with wins of 14-5 and 8-5, the Mets opened this series in Detroit with a 14-3 win before Wednesday’s rout. Surprisingly, the Mets didn’t hit a home run Wednesday, and only homered in one of the games during their four-game win streak. Still, they managed to pound out a combined 69 hits, one shy of a team record for four games.
Angel Pagan and Daniel Murphy led the way on Wednesday, driving in four runs each. “It’s been unbelievable,” said Pagan. “We’ve been getting a lot of runs early in the game, and tonight we took advantage of their bullpen being a little erratic.” The Mets scored eight of their runs off former Yankee reliever Phil Coke, whose record dropped to 1-8.
Jose Reyes had two hits and continues to lead the National League in batting with a .349 average. The Mets (41-39) are two games above .500 for the first time since the fourth game of the season, and are in third place in the NL East, 9.5 back of the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Mets will face Tigers ace Justin Verlander in Thursday’s series finale, then return home to face the New York Yankees. “We want to win [Thursday’s] game,” said manager Terry Collins. “There would be nothing bigger than to go play the Yankees on a roll.”
