The New York Mets have chosen Terry Collins to be their next manager. Collins has previous Major League managing experience, albeit in the last millennium. Collins managed the Houston Astros from 1994-1996, then the Anaheim Angels from 1997-1999. In each of his first five seasons, his teams finished second, but he never made the playoffs and never won more than 85 games.

What are the Mets thinking hiring a guy with a career MLB managing record of 454-444? Best case, it’s an indication that the Mets have given up on trying to be the Junior Yankees and realized that throwing a ton of money at Joe Torre or some other big name isn’t the way to go. At least as likely though is that no big names would return the Mets calls — the only other finalist for the job with big league experience was Bob Melvin.

New Mets general manager Sandy Alderson probably sees Collins as a good guy for a rebuilding effort for two to three years (exactly what he lasted in Houston and Anaheim). If he gets the Mets competitive-ish that’s a bonus, but Collins will teach up the youngsters and leave the next Mets manager with less of a mess than Willie Randolph and Jerry Manuel left.

The Mets are coming off back-to-back fourth place finishes in two full seasons under Jerry Manuel, although their 79 wins last season was a nine-win improvement from 2008. Vegas currently has the Mets at 35/1 odds to win the 2011 World Series.
